Kennebunkport weekend scene

Weekend itinerary

Dock Square, a boat or beach, then Cape Porpoise

Walk Dock Square Friday, choose a whale watch or Kennebunk beach Saturday, then follow Ocean Avenue to Cape Porpoise before leaving Sunday.

By Cal Mercer — a Second Star Guide itinerary

The Kennebunk River meets Dock Square before the coast opens toward Gooch's Beach, Ocean Avenue, and Cape Porpoise.

Best length

2 nights

Two nights cover Dock Square plus one full water day. Add a third night if both whale watching and an unhurried beach day matter.

Stay

Kennebunkport Inn

A historic inn directly on Dock Square, useful for travelers who want restaurants, shops, and the Kennebunk…

Best stretch

Gooch's Beach or a Gulf of Maine whale watch

A whale watch and a long beach session rarely fit the same day well. Choose one, then keep the return meal near Dock Square or the harbor.

Weekend route

Village, water, and Cape Porpoise

Friday stays around Dock Square. Saturday commits to the offshore boat or a beach day. Sunday follows Ocean Avenue before Cape Porpoise or departure.

Friday

Friday, 4–9 p.m.: Dock Square and the Kennebunk River.

Check in, cross the bridge between Kennebunk and Kennebunkport, browse Dock Square, and keep the first dinner within walking distance of the river.

4:00 PM

Saturday

Saturday: whale watch or Kennebunk beach, not both at full length.

Take the earliest practical boat if offshore wildlife is the priority. Otherwise use the morning tide and parking window for Gooch's, Mother's, Colony, or Parsons Beach.

4:30 PM

Afternoon

Return to the river before dinner.

After the boat or beach, shower and walk Dock Square rather than adding another coastal drive. Cape Porpoise works better as its own Sunday stop.

Sunday

Sunday: Ocean Avenue and Cape Porpoise.

Follow Ocean Avenue past the rocky shore and Walker's Point, then continue to Cape Porpoise for the working harbor, Goat Island Light views, and a lobster stop if it is open.
